Uses Radiused Inserts on Spiral Cutterhead
Wood Magazine, Volume 168, 2006-02

by Toolmark

The reviewer said that the radiused inserts on this spiral cutterhead have characteristics of both square inserts and helical knives, namely that the cutters leave wide but shallow ridges in wood but ridges that are easy to sand flat, and that the cutters are easy to change. The radiused inserts are mounted at an angle, which clears chips better than square inserts, which reduces the amount of feed pressure required. Another effect of the radiused inserts is that more chips are directed out of the back end of the cutterhead so that they aren't sucked into the dust collector system. The rack-and-pinion fence mechanism works well on the heavy cast-iron fence, although the small knob is not as easy to use as a large handwheel would be. Also, the rack protrudes far from the back of the machine on 8-inch wide cuts. The machine's mobile base with three casters built into the cabinet is useful, and saves on the extra expense that would be needed to buy a heavy-duty mobile base. At the time of publication, Yorkcraft added a new jointer to their inventory, model #2351, with a slightly more powerful motor. That new jointer costs $1,100 with a spiral head, or $650 with a straight knives head.
