FWW's Choice for Best Value
Fine Woodworking Magazine, Volume 178, 2005-07

by Researchgirl

This benchtop mortiser was Fine Woodworking's choice for best value of a group of eight machines tested. It has their favorite fence, with a miter-gauge-like bar and slot assembly and a sturdy fence-locking system. The fence also stays square to the chisel when the machine is moved. It also has a convenient to adjust sliding hold-down, and its fence has two cutouts in its middle that allow the hold-down to be lowered below the top of the fence. The Woodtek is one of two machines in the group with a vise to keep your workpiece secure against the fence. It has end stops and a very convenient long lever arm which means ease of cutting. No tools are needed to secure the hold-down to the shaft, as it needs nothing other than a chuck-key to install the drill bit. FWW mentioned that the Woodtek has a conveniently big lock handle which makes it easy to secure the chisel. Finally, the Woodtek's motor stood out as quite powerful and the machine jammed less frequently than others when cutting aggressively.
