Major Time Saver and Simple to Use! (2007-05-28)
I'm not much of a tool person but since this is Scott and Jeff's site I thought I would give it a whirl. I usually keep my web opinions out of the analog over at www.digitaldad.com.
We moved into a 40 year old house in Bellevue, WA about two years ago with a generously sized patio/deck made of cedar that connected the patio out to the rest of the property. The structure was sound but quite a bit of the cedar slats needed to be replaced. I worked on and off (mostly off) last summer to cut and replace the wood - using an $8 mitre saw from Lowe's. Like I said, I'm not much of a tool person.
The old deck was originally painted orange (why?) so staining the combo new/old wood was out of the question. I was loathing painting it by hand when i saw a Wagner Power Painter at Home Depot. I bought the low-end model, which I thought might be a no-no, but it turns out the piston/engine mechanism is basically the same for the whole homerange of products. I was looking for something simple - pour in paint, plug it in and go. Plus, I'm cheap.
I used BEHR porch paint formulation, which is designed for heavier tread use than house paint, in a nice red/brown "fireside" color.
The Power Painter worked great. As advertised, you just pour the paint in the plastic can, screw it on, aim and press the trigger. Keep it about 10" or so from your surface. i kept the flow valve alll the way opne and burned through two gallons of paint quite quickly. It covered all of the wood crannies really well and went on very smooth.
As expected, you really need to clean thid thing when you are done. An as expected you need to unplug it first. You disassemble it like a rifle and make sure every surface is well scrubbed. Only two items I'd like to improve on:
- The unit has significant vibration. After a while you need to rest your hand. - The paint unit is small, like a quart. I know you can get tubes to put into a bucket but I'd rather have a longer paint unit as an accesory to at least cut my refills in half.
I paid $60 for it and was worth every penny.

I Wish I Hadn't Bought It (2009-09-02)
It worked well the first time I used it, although it clogged easily. I cleaned it according to the instructions and different comments I've seen on websites. On the second use there was just no luck.... (More)

Does What It's Supposed To (2009-05-14)
We purchased the Wagner 305 at the local hardware store (for less than on Amazon!) after a recommendation from the local hardware dude. We're painting an out building which starts with some very thick... (More)

It's Brilliant! (2008-09-13)
Wagner Wide Shot Power Painter
I read the reviews here and decided to risk it - I bought one second hand from Craigslist for $30. I have to say it is brilliant! I read the instructions... (More)
