5 out of 5 If You Are Going to Build, Buy This First (2010-01-01)

I am currently building my third shop. I have been a woodworker for almost 40 years now and still learned a lot from this book. My new shop is being built around an existing 20 x 50 steel frame building, with the help of the author as well as my own experiences I have been able to make a great layout by adding an additional 16 feet on each side of the original building resulting in a building 52 x 50 with three general areas (equipment room, lumber storage and assembly room, and hand tool/ finishing room) I am very excited about the new shop am looking forward to using it soon (electrical is nearly done!) 4 out of 5 A Great Place to Start (2007-05-01)

Any book with a picture of Sam Maloof has to have some merit and this is no exception. Sandor's book on designing and building a shop is a great way to start if you are planning a shop and need ideas. It has profiles of lots of types of shops that will help you understand what you might need in a shop of your own.

Don't expect to read this book and be able to design and build a shop, however. It should really be called "The Practical Guide to Figuring Out What I Want in My Shop Dream Shop Before I Hire Someone to Build It." There are other books on how to actually build a shop (none of them very good), but this isn't it. It's probably too big a subject for one book.

Buy this book and read it if you are planning a shop and have never done it before. It will get you on the right track.

5 out of 5 Pornography for Woodworkers (2010-01-17)

This book contains a LOT of information, but honestly it's hard to focus on the content. With each page brimming with vivacious workshop photography, even the most sardonic woodworker will... (More)

5 out of 5 I Learned a Lot (2009-06-25)

I found a lot of good ideas in this book. I am picking up woodworking and am building my shop. This book gives many examples of furniture shops and workplaces. You can easily adapt the tips to your... (More)

5 out of 5 The Woodworking Shop of My Dreams (2009-02-16)

Finally in my retirement am I having the opportunity to outfit the woodworking shop of my dreams. I now have ample space both for material storage and working room. Being guided by "Setting Up Shop... (More)
