The Most Complete Book on Sharpening Available (2007-07-01)
In my mind, sharpening hand tools is a personal thing. Not personal because it needs to be done alone in a darkened room, but because everyone must find a method that suits them. Leonard Lee's book on sharpening, while the most complete and comprehensive that I have seen, certainly does not contain every method for sharpening. I tried a number of different sharpening methods and combinations of methods that were documented in books, magazines, and internet articles before I settled on one that was quick and I felt created an acceptable edge for my tools. In my case, that was a high-end grinding wheel and a buffing wheel with different grits that I use for both my chisels and turning tools.
The thing you will learn from "The Complete Book of Sharpening" is not so much how to sharpen, but what it means to sharpen. Lee's description of metallurgy and microscopic pictures of sharpened edges will help you to understand what it is you are doing during the sharpening process. He also describes in detail how a tool cuts wood fibers.
Don't skip these early chapters and go right to the sharpening methods. While this book contains solid instruction, method of sharpening are a dime a dozen. Once you understand the metal of the tool a little better, you can begin to learn how to create an edge that give you great results in the shop.
