Good Cut Quality, Bad Snipe
Wood Magazine, Volume 151, 2003-10

by Toolmark

The reviewer said this is basically a standard, uninnovative portable planner. The depth-of-cut gauge is accurate but the snipe depth is about the same as the Grizzly G0505, which is to say .004-.005 inches. The cut quality is good, the 38 1/2-inch extension tables are pleasingly long, there is onboard storage for the knife-changing tools, and a dust collection hood that fits a 4-inch hose is included. On the down side, the thickness stop slips when the cutterhead is cranked down against it, the cutterhead locking handle can interfere with the power switch operation, and the planer's 93-pound weight is heavy for a portable planer. The cutterhead crank works like a tablesaw handle on a blade elevator. At the time of the review, an official from Shop Fox said that a larger knob will be put on the thickness stop to allow it to be cranked tighter to prevent slippage.
