Inexpensive, But Can Have Severe Tear-out
Wood Magazine, Volume 148, 2003-05

by Toolmark

The reviewer said that during testing, a supposed anomaly in this portable planer caused the thickness gauge to frequently jam while in use. A representative from Ryobi said the anomaly was that the gauge was incorrectly assembled in the factory but that this problem should be a one-time circumstance. This planer has the lowest price of any portable planer tested, but the cut quality is below average and tear-out is a bad problem when using curly maple. On the plus side, the cutterhead lock is in front of the machine where it is prominent, there is onboard storage for knife-changing tools, and the dust port fits both 2 1/2" and 4" hoses. One additional low point is that the area for changing knives is cramped, which slows the process of changing them, even though the knives are self-aligning.

A Good Buy for the Money
Fine Woodworking Magazine, Volume 161, 2003-02

by Researchgirl

Fine Woodworking had few complaints about this benchtop planer from Ryobi. They said that it had minimal snipe, was very parallel, and had an efficient dust collection system. Knife changing was relatively quick and at around $270, this planer is relatively inexpensive for its class. FWW's chief complaint was the machine's noise level, which at 101 decibels is higher than others in its class.
