grade A

Rated Top Value
Wood Magazine, Volume 173, 2006-11

by Toolmark

The reviewer mentioned only positives for this planer. The cut quality is very good and the snipe is average. All controls are easily accessible and readable from the right-hand side, the top is removable for spacious access for changing knives, there are eight thickness stops (ranging from 1/8" to 1 3/4"), the price is average, and there are several extras included such as a dual-port dust hood, a heavy leg stand made of steel, and an extra set of knives.

grade B

Great with Red Oak, Poor with Pine
Wood Magazine, Volume 148, 2003-05

by Toolmark

The reviewer listed many high points about this model, but also said that cut quality is only about average, and the tear-out was severe on a test using curly maple. Another plus is that this model allowed the fastest knife changes of any portable planer tested, and the tools for changing knives are conveniently stored onboard. Also, the dust hood, universal leg stand, and extra set of knives do not cost extra. The motor is quiet (99B) although it whines more than the Makita 2012NB, and the dust port fits both 2 1/2" and 4" hoses. The crank, cutterhead lock, and thickness stops are located on the same side of the machine for convenience. The depth-of-cut gauge is accurate and easy to read, and the machine comes with a lifetime warranty against factory defects. Some minuses are that the thickness scale is difficult to read, and overall the planer is heavy (85 pounds). Paradoxically, this planer tested among the best on red oak, but among the worst on pine.

An Excellent Midrange-Price Choice
Fine Woodworking Magazine, Volume 160, 2003-01

by Researchgirl

According to FWW's test, this planer operates very well and has some useful features. It has almost no snipe, good carriage parallelism, is the least noisy at 94 decibels, and takes a mere five minutes (compared with 25 minutes for some similar machines) to change the knives. It has convenient controls such as its exceptionally smooth crank and a solid lever as a cutterhead lock. It comes with its own dust collection hood, unlike most which are sold separately, and with an extra set of knives.

5 out of 5 The R4330 Is a Very Nice Planer!!!! I Love It!!! (2008-02-14)

This is an incredible deal. I love this planer. Makes such a smooth finish!!! Think I'll buy another one. The only problem I have is the blades can only be purchased by Ridgid. That really sucks. They really need to make them available at HD as I can just imagine the inconvenience when it runs dull and you are out of a spare set. Otherwise two plumb thumbs up!

5 out of 5 Great Planer Buy One! (2007-09-25)

I own this planer and it is great. The warranty can't be beat. I'm sure glad I bought it.
