4 out of 5 Excellent Value In a Great Saw (2008-05-05)

I purchased this saw about a year ago after reviewing practically every other saw available. Right out of the box this saw performed well although if you do very precise work you'll need to upgrade the blade from the factory Ridgid blade. I put on a Frued industrial blade and I have had wonderful cuts ever since. The table is very easy to adjust as well as the compound miter settings. The depth gauge is not the best but does the job when dead-on accuracy is not needed. The laser is only really visible in muted settings, in direct sunlight it is worthless. I have been a carpenter for many years and have never relied on this kind of gizmo so I'm not disappointed. When you can see the laser line it is aprox 1/8th of an inch to the left of the actual cut and is only a reference line for the blade position. The other negative is the dust collection bag, Just throw it out because it doesn't collect anything. I have my saw hooked up to a shop vac system and it still doesn't collect all the dust.( this problem is true for every miter saw out there except maybe the Fein System which will cost you hundreds more than the Ridgid) All the fence adjustment features work well and the adjustable hold down clamp is very handy. If you do alot of crown molding and need to cross cut wider boards this is your saw, if not- a nonsliding single compound saw will work well for your needs. I give the Ridgid MS1290LZ1 an A-.
