Fine Woodworking chose this well-made and smooth-operating machine for the middle price range. They liked their cast-iron with dual pivot points fence design. They were impressed by the quality and effort to make machines user-friendly by Emerson Electric Co., the maker of Ridgid woodworking machines. Some features unique to the Ridgid jointer are an adjustable sliding dust chute, rubberized coatings on all handles and levers, organized parts trays, and a magnifying glass to view the depth-of-cut gauge. The base opens and widens at the bottom, a plus because it is more stable, but a minus because the open base means a noisier machine than one with an enclosed motor.
