The reviewer said his tested model was almost perfectly set, out-of-the-box, although the rear shoe required a tiny adjustment before use. This planer has enough horsepower to make 1/8"-deep cuts as wide as the shoe (3 1/4") in red oak with very little bogging down. The cut quality is definitely good so the surface requires very little sanding afterwards. There is a tilting fence for steadying the tool for chamfering at 45 degrees, but rough places in the cast V-groove in the base caused unnecessary slowing when sliding the planer along the workpiece.

Coming with a cutting-depth adjusting knob, Wood magazine calls the adjusted cuts to hit right on the mark. While tested, the tool bogged slightly, but not enough to consider it a problem when working on projects. A not so good point to the model is that the tilting fence for chamfering has some rough spots in the casting of the tilting fence and causes it to become difficult to slide the tool across a workpiece.
