Good Depth-setting System, But Needs Several Accessories
Wood Magazine, Volume 164, 2005-09

by Toolmark

The reviewer liked the depth-setting system in this router for handheld use since the system has six turret stops, microadjustment capability, and a very visible scale. There are several low points, however. The router is very heavy, 18 pounds, and was the heaviest router tested. It is also impossible to make coarse depth adjustments when the router is in a table, and the fine adjustment mechanism needs either a wrench or an extra $25 extension knob, neither of which are supplied free with the tool. A 1/4-inch collect is not included, either. Also, when making height adjustments the user must hold the plunge lock open. Like the Porter-Cable model 7518, no dust collection accessories are included or even available for this router. This is a particularly important issue because the router's fan is powerful enough to sometimes pull debris into its air intake. The motor has five discrete speeds instead of continuously variable speed. The motor speed fluctuates when under a load, although this does not affect cut quality. The Porter-Cable company explains that this varying speed is due to the router's electronic feedback system that uses current instead of motor speed to determine the proper speed, whereas newer speed control systems use motor speed as the indicator signal. The reviewer said this unusual behavior is also present in the Porter-Cable 7518 model. The reviewer noted that although the trigger-style switch is well-located for handheld use, when the router is used in-table this switch is more difficult to operate.
