Well Thought-Out Machine
Fine Woodworking Magazine, Volume 160, 2003-01

by Researchgirl

Overall, Fine Woodworking liked this Nova lathe, manufactured by New Zealand Teknatool International and distributed by Woodcraft (www.woodcraft.com). The lathe had many useful and even unique features, such as its DVR (digital variable reluctance) motor. The lathe has a cast-iron bed and its motor is free of belts and pulleys, helping it to run smoother than the average lathe in its class. The machine also features an LCD touch control panel, from which all of the motor functions are operated, and a swiveling headstock. The lathe claimed full torque at all speeds, but FWW did notice a small power loss at the lowest speed. Although mainly impressed, FWW also had a few gripes with the machine: it doesn't come with a handwheel, it could have used a longer locking handle with a knob, the standard live center is not as good as the aftermarket version, and the ramp-up speed was slow.
