WHAT'S THIS?

Top Performer But Won't Handle Thin Stock

The reviewer mentioned both very strong points and very very weak points about this portable planer. One very strong point is that this planer performed as well as a Delta 22-580 in finishing mode with curly maple, which is to say it had very good performance. Also, a user can quickly change blades, probably because of easy access and the use of springs instead of jackscrews in the cutterhead. The biggest problem is that any boards thinner than 1/4" are always chewed up at the end, despite the specifications saying that the planer can handle stock down to 3/16". Other minor problems are that the cutterhead is difficult to lock, and the thickness scale is difficult to read due to its fine increments.

According to Fine Woodworking's test, the Jet is outperformed by others in its class. Although it has an acceptable amount of snipe, it has poor carriage parallelism, is very noisy at 101 decibels, and takes around twenty minutes to change the knives. It has a cumbersome cutterhead lock, with two separate cutterhead-locking handles which slowed the locking process. The new knives and optional dust-collection hood for this machine are also more expensive than other manufacturers'.
