The reviewer said this model costs more than most other mini-lathes, but that the extra features are worth the money. This mini-lathe can handle unusually heavy cuts without problem, the body is cast iron, and the motor is a powerful 3/4-hp. Although the lathe can vibrate significantly on heavy cuts, ordinarily the vibration is quite low. This model comes with 6-inch and 10-inch toolrests since the bed is so long. This model also has chamfered spindle threads, minimal spindle run-out, 1 7/8-inch stroke, and built-in tool storage. Two features that would make this model better would be a variable speed motor and a longer lamp neck. There also exists a Jet JMP1014 model, which has the same speed selections and fixed speed, but the JMP1014 has a relatively small housing, so the JWL1220 is easier for changing belts.
