Good Hold-down, Some Weak Ergonomics

The reviewer said the fingers on this mortiser are three inches long, which is longer than found on most mortisers, and this extra length is good for stabilizing thicker pieces of wood. Other pluses are that the secure fence and hold-down do not need tools, and the chuck key is easy to use because of its length. Although this tool can mortise off the table via its rotating head, to do so requires the mortiser to be unbolted from the bench. The workpiece capacity can be boosted by two inches by an optional riser block that costs $20. The drawbacks were essentially all ergonomic: the short handle requires extra strength to operate on mortises that are 1/2" wide or wider, the straight handle lacks a horizontal grip that would be more convenient, and there is no place on the mortiser to keep adjustment tools other than the chuck key.

The Jet Mortiser was easy to assemble and sets up nicely. It works great with my HTC PM7000 stand . It would be nice to have a different handle configuration. The jack style handle was a bit uncomfortable on my shoulder as I control my cut. I would recomend this tool to the hobbiest.
