WHAT'S THIS?

Sturdy Stand, But Severe Snipe & Tear-out

The reviewer listed only one positive point about this tool: the stand is sturdy and comes with the tool for free. On the negative side, no dust collection hood is available, not even as an accessory. Also, blade changing is slow, partly because the knives are not indexed and the cutterhead rotates while the blades are being changed. Worst, there is severe snipe due to the lack of a cutterhead lock, plus there can be extreme tear-out, at least according to a test using curly maple. Also the reviewer's planer arrived with the cutterhead out of alignment by 3/64", although a Grizzly representative said that can happen during shipment and the fix is simple via a service call to Grizzly's customer service.

This Grizzly planer operates moderately well: according to Fine Woodworking, it has very good carriage parallelism and is not very noisy, but it also has more snipe than most machines in its class. In terms of features, it has no cutterhead lock, but comes with a free stand and features reversible knives, convenient in that the knife can simply be turned around to expose a sharp new blade.
