WHAT'S THIS?

Much Power, But Bad Tear-out

The reviewer said that although this model planed curly maple very cleanly between snipe areas, it tore out badly in the snipe areas. This machine has the most power of any of the portable planers tested, which for example allows it to remove 5/32" from a 12"-wide red oak board. Also on the positive side is that the stand comes with the planer and is quite sturdy. On the negative side, the dust collection hood does not come with the planer, and is $20 extra. Another negative is that the thickness scale is on top of the machine and its reading depends on the angle from which it is viewed, a situation made worse by the manual that does not describe how to adjust that scale. The machine also took the longest of any of the portable planers tested to change blades. Other negatives are that the knives have only one edge (therefore last only half as long between sharpenings), and there is bad snipe due to the lack of a cutterhead lock.
