Great Price, Choice of Cutterheads

The reviewer said this jointer has a spiral cutterhead, but that the Grizzly model G0586 is the same machine with a straight-knife cutterhead and a lower price. The G0586 costs $655, compared to this G0593, which costs $995. ($655 is a great price, especially when considering that this price is about half of that of the top-rated jointer--the Powermatic 60B--which is $1,200.) One advantage of the solid carbide square inserts, which have four sharp sides per insert in this jointer's cutterhead, is that they will last more than four times as long as high-speed steel straight knives. The rack-and-pinion system that moves the heavy fence across the table is appealing. The Yorkcraft YC-8J jointer uses the same kind of rack-and-pinion system but the large handwheel on the Grizzy machines is easier to operate than the Yorkcraft's small plastic knob. One safety feature is lacking that would be desirable in this machine is a depth-of-cut limiter.
