Living only a couple of hours away from the Springfield Missouri Grizzly store, I am fortunate to see all of their products first hnd. On August 8, 2007 I had just that opportunity.
I went there to research the Grizzly jointers vs the Delta jointers. After seeing the G0490 I decided on this machine.
The jointer is very stable when the built in mobil base is retracted. When the mobile base is down the machine moves quite easily.
Being one that absolutely hates to change cutter knives when they become worn, I opted to have the service department at Grizzly install the Byrd Shelix cutterhead for an additional cost of $395.00. No more knives to mess with. The Shelix cutterhead has individual cutters with four sharp cutting edges. When one edge gets dull or nicked, just loosen the sec screw and rotate it 90 degrees. The cutting inserts are set at a slight angle so they provide a shearing effect and leave the wood like a piece of glass.
The unit comes standard with a 3hp motor and it appears to be a little over kill, but who ever complained about having too much horse power.
Right from the point of delivery the machine cut accurately and no adjustments were necessary.
I was told that this machine is made on the same assembly line as the Delta DJ 8. My past jointers all had wheels to adjust the beds. The G0490 has levers which have taken very little time to adjust to,
Overall, I feel this machine is top notch. I will see how it is in a couple of years after several thousand board feef of red oak have been passed over the bed.
