Sturdy But Still Below-Par

According to Fine Woodworking, this lathe does not have the best design or the best execution. It could handle only 22 lbs. on a brake-and-lever setup until stalling as opposed to the over 40 lbs. of weight which could be applied to other machines in its class. Also, FWW didn't like its 1/2-in. wide drive belt as it was too small for a large lathe-- the machine stalled at 200 rpm on heavy cuts. Its auxiliary disk sander on the headstock means you can't use a knockout bar to free the drive center. The tool-rest base was also too short to allow for large bowl turning. On the other hand, FWW liked the Grizzly's very strong tool rest which provided for stability and no movement. Its 1 1/2-in. spindle is also more rigid than others in its class (1 1/4-in.), providing for less vibration.
