An Average Machine

This machine has a horseshoe-shaped, cast hold-down that slides on a rod mounted to its fence. Fine Woodworking liked this system, saying that the hold-down did "an admirable job." Its spring-loaded cogged lever was not FWW's favorite lever arm system as it took two hands to operate it. Although runout did not affect the machine's cutting ability, this Fisch had the second highest runout of the group of eight tested benchtop mortisers. A couple of features which set it apart are its microadjustable fence and its upper-limit stop on the support column.

Useful Depth Stop But Somewhat Poor Ergonomics

The reviewer liked the top setting on the depth stop because it saves time and effort by limiting the upward motion of the head. Other pluses were a place to store tools on the mortiser itself and a microadjustable fence for highly accurate selection of mortise location. The low points were described as mostly ergonomic: a horizontal grip could have been more comfortable than the straight handle grip, and the locking knob of the microadjustable fence was difficult to reach. Another drawback was that the head-return spring was too strong, which made the cutting of deep or wide mortises more difficult than necessary.
