3 out of 5 Simple Machine Runs Fairly Well (2008-02-23)

Simpler and cheaper than Delta's other benchtop mortiser (14-651), the MM300 still runs acceptably well. It can be setup to cut longer or wider than normal workpieces by a process of unbolting and turning the top of the machine around, then reattaching it to the base. Next, the base is unbolted, rotated and reattached so the fence extends over the workbench, leaving an open space big enough for larger workpieces under the chisel. Although the process takes some effort, this feature could be useful. FWW noted but did not love its spring-loaded cogged lever because it took two hands to operate it. It also has a horseshoe-shaped, cast hold-down that slides on a rod mounted to the fence. FWW liked its hold-down even though it was not its absolute favorite.
