1 out of 5 Should I Be Disappointed? (2007-05-21)

This saw was a real emotional roller coaster for me. I was excited when I was finally able to make the decision to go buy it and sorely disappointed after buying it and using it.

The first one I almost bought was damaged. Luckily the Lowe's Home Improvement associate who assisted me was smart enough to open the box before letting me leave with it. There was one more on the shelf so he got it down with the store forklift and it too was damaged. I was offered the choice to purchase at a discount the floor model, which was in poor shape from every moron who walked by it cranking on the knobs and breaking the odd piece off of it. I decided against it. They called several other locations and found one that had one in stock. I drove miles away to the other location and bought it there.

It was heavy and the stand was a pain in the butt to assemble. I finally got it together and was very excited to begin using it. When I started it for the first time it vibrated so badly I thought something might be loose. After closer inspection I noticed that the belt was not quite lined up properly. I think the pulley on the motor was on backwards. Not a huge deal. I corrected that problem and the vibration was not as bad, but still quite a bit more than I thought was reasonable. About the time I was thinking that, the blade came off the top wheel.

I took the pulley off the motor and decided to check the wheels. I found that each of them were out of balance. I went to auto parts store and bought some stick on wheel weights and did my best to balance them without disassembling the entire thing. I put the blade and belt back on and the vibration was better. Not totally gone, but better. I began to cut some wood and soon the darn blade came off again.

I had that sicking feeling like you get when you just lost several hundred bucks to a bogus hand of cards at a casino. That's why I don't gamble. I do not like to lose money.

After reading some reviews online and encountering a few bad reviews on Amazon and epinions with similar complaints, I got angry and decided that Lowe's was going to take it back or else!

I began the sad process of disassembling the saw and repacking it as carefully as I could. I loaded it up and drove it back to the Lowe's miles away from home and told them that someone else bought me the same saw from another Lowe's for my birthday. Taking the time to slip the straps off the box rather than cutting them paid off. They accepted the saw as unopened and returned my money.

The bottom line is that this saw is flimsy; the door is thin and the vibration causes it to come open while in use; the pulley on the motor was installed backwards at the factory; the wheels are horribly unbalanced; I'm not even sure balancing the wheels could account for all the vibration; the blade wouldn't stay on. I think Delta has some serious quality issues that need to be addressed before they spoil their otherwise good name.

I have heard good things about the Delta's next model up the food chain while I have heard many bad things about the new, cheaper delta tools finding their way into home centers across the nation.

I'll give one star because it was cheap. If it worked out for me I might be able to live with the ill fitting parts and flimsy doors, but it didn't.

I think I'm going to buy the Jet 14" deluxe model and will review that if I do. Either way someone's saw will end up in my garage and I sure hope the review is better.

4 out of 5 Must Have Improved Since First Launch (2008-05-29)

Had I read these reviews prior to picking up this saw, there's no way I would have purchased it. I picked up at Lowes a week ago & just assembled today. While assembly process was not as smooth as it... (More)

4 out of 5 It Works Very Well for Me (2008-05-29)

I have owned this for a year and I am very happy with it. I just upgraded my saw with the riser block and Carter bearing guides. I also purchased the Kreg fence and the movable base about the... (More)

4 out of 5 I Must Have Been Lucky? (2007-08-31)

First off, there is no arguing the fit and finish of the castings aren't great but my table is flat and for me that is what is important. As for others with run-out problems etc. it just... (More)
