The reviewer said this planer did well in most performance tests, such as tests of cut quality and lack of snipe. Another positive is that the thickness stop can be set at any height ranging from 1/8" to 6 1/2". Some low points are that the "blade zero" indicator varied too much (1/64"), the thickness stop was awkward to engage, and the thickness stop was not repeatable with respect to accuracy across different workpieces. The dust hood costs an extra $25, though it can gather debris from either side of the machine.

The reviewer rated this Top Tool among the portable planers tested because it is everything one would expect for a portable planer, even though the price is on the high side. There are two speeds possible: dimensioning rate and finishing rate. Finishing rate is 15 feet per minute slower, which tends to create a smoother finish. This planer had the least tear-out of any planer tested, at least for curly maple, even when the cutting depth was doubled to 1/64 inches. The thickness stop is simple to use and can be set anywhere up to the full capacity (6 1/2 inches). The depth-of-cut scale and the thickness scales are top quality and easy to read. Two low points are that the dust collection hood costs an additional $25, and the machine's 86-pound weight is unusually heavy for a portable planer.

This planer is one of the most expensive in its class, but the trade-off of paying big bucks is getting a lot of useful features. Although it is heavy, the Delta has excellent carriage parallelism, minimum snipe, and is one of the quietest at 95 decibels. FWW liked its lever which locked the cutterhead, its convenient cutting-depth scale and "blade zero" depth-of-cut gauge. It also uses steel pins to position the knives on the cutterhead and is the only machine that offers two feed speeds. On top of everything it does the best job collecting dust "hands-down" (FWW).

Delta Planer (2008-04-27)
I purchesed this planer about 4 years ago. This is my first planer.
The only problems I have had was the rollers slipping. I have cleaned the rollers several time. I will try the waxing the bed. My stop is messed up and I need to fix it.
I am very happy with the preformance of this product. The scale is very accurate. Easy to adjust.
The added dust recovery housing is a must. Your work shop would be a mess with out it. I have not changed the blades but they are reversable.
