Low-Budget Choice
Fine Woodworking Magazine, Volume 178, 2005-07

by Researchgirl

This Delta benchtop mortiser was Fine Woodworking's choice for a tight-budget out of a group of eight machines tested. It has an above average fence that is the tallest of the group. It has a horseshoe-shaped, cast hold-down that slides on a rod mounted to the fence; it also has two cutouts in the fence which make it easier to secure stock narrow to the fence, as the hold-down can be lowered below the top of the fence. FWW also liked its toolless hold-down-- the machine needed only an Allen wrench that is integrated into the chuck-key in order to secure the chisel, although they did say that a lever handle would be more convenient. The spring-loaded cogged lever is average to use, but requires two hands unlike the spring-loaded cogged collar of the Shop Fox W1671. This mortiser also includes a riser-block kit which adds about 1 3/4 in. to the original 4 1/4 in. of plunge depth. This machine had the best bit-changing system of the bunch. Its wraparound door gave the easiest access to change both the bit and chisel. Although its runout did not affect its cutting ability, it had the most of any machine in the group.

Top Value Though Not Too Ergonomic
Wood Magazine, Volume 156, 2004-06

by Toolmark

The reviewer described this mortiser as top value, though it is slightly slower than the Shop Fox W1671, which was also described as top value. One advantage of this mortiser over the Shop Fox W1671 is that it comes with a good selection of chisels, which the W1671 does not. Some of the positive points of this Delta 14-651 mortiser are the hexhead wrench on a chuck key that allows a bit/chisel change with only one tool, a very smooth mechanism to adjust the fence location, a large and stable work surface, a cutout in the fence to allow extra narrow pieces (down to 1 inch), the head can rotate for mortise work off the table, the mortiser has places to store other tools, and four chisels are included. The only notable drawback was that the straight handle grip was not as ergonomic as a horizontal grip would likely be.

1 out of 5 AVOID THIS ITEM AT ALL COST! (2008-09-21)

As with so many other people that have purchased this item, it arrived broken. Mine was broken in the same place as the customer photo shows, a major cast iron section. They either aren't packaging... (More)

1 out of 5 Frustrated (2008-06-06)

Avoid this tool at all cost. I purchased one 2 months ago, uncrated and set it up yesterday and used it for the first time today. On the fourth mortise cut, the handle flopped freely and the head... (More)

4 out of 5 Mortiser Good; Delivery Poor (2008-06-06)

I would recommend the Delta 14-651 mortiser and would buy it again. I was able to complete the setup and adjustments fairly quickly and with a little practice could cut good mortises even in red and... (More)
