Bosch has put together a sensible and functional tool in the 1618EVS D Handle router.

Height adjustments are quick and accurate with two-stage adjustment features. Unlike other brands of D-handled routers, this Bosch keeps the bit centered in the baseplate when the height is locked into place. The tool balances well in the hand making routing operations safe and easy. The 1618EVS has plenty of power for its size and class, plenty for every day uses, and enough for the times when power demand for an extra large bit in extra hard material is required.

The only negative comment is that the collet design doesn't always release the bit when loosened and requires turning the collet nut off until it actually pushes the bit out. This problem is minimized by keeping the collet assembly free of fine dust and lightly lubricated with silicone spray. The upside is that bits don't creep out of the collet either.

For freehand routing operations, I don't think you can beat this tool.
