Smooth, Clean, and Protective
Wood Magazine, Volume 153, 2003-12

by Berkeleywoodboy

With great test results, this tool has definitely been one of the better planers made. When the chamfering cuts were tested, it came out with great results. The reversible carbide blades allow for easily replaceable blades, which can also be substituted with standard-size carbide or high-speed steel blades. The tool is also very clean, where chips can be ejected to the left or right into a vacuum hose or dust bag. One more great feature is the "park shoe" which allows for the tool to be set safely down onto the bench while winding down from use.

5 out of 5 Smooth Cuts, No Negatives (2008-04-28)

The reviewer did not mention any low points with this model. This model of planer leaves smooth cuts in both hardwood and softwood. At the full 3/32" cutting depth, pine 2x stock has no notable bogging and good cut quality. 45-degree chamfers produced no problems, whether using the built-in grooves in the front shoe, or using the fence angled at 45 degrees. The included reversible carbide blades are easy to change. The chip ejector is intriguing in that it can eject chips in a stream in any of several directions. The park shoe on the bottom allows the planer to be set down without marring the surface on which the planer is sitting.

4 out of 5 Well Worth the Price! (2009-04-11)

Purchased this unit today after spending quite a bit of time researching models online (especially this website). Tried the planer out on a 2 inch piece of oak and was really pleased. I have used a few professional planers on the job including the port-a-plane. So I have a good basis for comparison. For $160 the 1594k surpassed expectations. It cuts smooth, is not even as loud as some belt sanders I have used and the dust chute is pretty slick. So far the wood chips blast out of there. I suspect if you plane wet lumber it may clog but I would expect that. The fence is flimsy and will not set up at 90 degrees. However when I used the planer being careful to hold the fence tight against the wood, the cut came out to 90 degrees. I guess the flex compensates for the inaccurate setup. We will see how long that holds true. I then reset the fence while estimating a 3 degree bevel (the fence gradations are in 5 degree increments) and in just a few passes I had a consistent 3 degree bevel.

I have noticed fence deficiencies with more expensive planers so I can live with this fence. With very little practice I have been able to get accurate results and the more I use it the more skill I will develop with it. I plan to plane down 9 doors next week so I can provide more of a report then.

I would like to find the vacuum hose attachment since the bag fills up fast.
