Not very reliable - parts are a problem (01-18-2011)

My model 40400 2 hp, 8 gallon air compressor tipped over in September, 2010 and broke the Check Valve, part #41. I immediately ordered a new part and was told this part was out of stock but would be shipped in the 1st week of October, 2010. Three weeks into October, 2010 I received a notice in the mail that the check valve was back ordered and would be shipped November 2, 2010. It wasn't. I called November 14, 2010 and was told the part would be shipped in early December, 2010. It wasn't. At last contact with these people in late December, 2010 I was told the part would be shipped the first week in January, 2011. Today is the second day of the second week in January, 2011 and I have received no part and no notice from Harbor Freight. In the meantime I'm looking on line to see if there's some replacement that can be used.

When this part wasn't broken I had some problems with the compressor. First, it is very easy to tip over since the wheels are quite close together making an unstable machine. Second, many times when turning the compressor on, it simply buzzed and wouldn't start. Sometimes it would start if turned on and off multiple times, other times it wouldn't. Sometimes it would start if I emptied the air tank of compressed air from the last use. Sometimes it wouldn't. However, I always managed to get it started using one or both of these methods. This often took 10 to 20 minutes and was a pain in the butt.

All in all, this machine sucks BIG TIME and is essentially a piece of crap.
Getting replacement parts is a joke. I'll buy clamps and other cheap hand tools from Harbor Freight in the future but never - NEVER - will I buy an electrical or air tool from them again.

Good as a secondary pump...not first class for durability (01-05-2011)

Bought this 40400-3VGA model several months ago and probably used it 4 times since then for small jobs. Puts out an impressive amount of air for it' size so I use it in my basement shop.
Tried to use it this morning and the ball-valve end broke clean-off. Did not hit anything, it's located far away from everything so it wasn't bumped or banged. I just heard an increasingly louder hissing sound till all of a sudden "pow" the end popped off completely. Now where do I get a replacement ball check valve?

Disappointing product (12-15-2010)

The air pressure switch is bad right out of the box...won`t shut off before the safety valve engages...I had another sears compressor when I bought this one so I didn`t use this one until today which is more than the warranty period so I own this white elephant... no recourse...everything else seems to be ok but you can`t use it as an ongoing tool source of power...never will get another Central Pneumatic product...

You get what you pay for. (10-22-2010)

I purchased this compressor from Harbor Freight approximately 4 months ago. It worked well in the beginning but then started leaking between the case and the oil resovior. I took the oil pan off and checked the edges with a straight edge and found the case to be warped or bad machining. I am attempting to work the issue out by staightening the case and re-sealing it. The compressor is so cheap it does not make sense to deal with the factory or Harbor Freight because what is a persons time worth? If this fix does not work I will throw the compressor away and get something else, but never purchase another Central Pneumatic product.

A little negative (08-14-2010)

Works well as a compressor but developed an oil leak between the motor and the case with less than 50 hours of use. There is/was no gasket shown on the parts list between the motor and the case. Unit was out of warranty. I contacted Harbor freight as to how it was suppose to be sealed. Customer service/technical support did not have an answer to the question. I was told it would be turned over to the manufacture and they would contact me in a couple days. One week later I still did not have an answer. I contacted HP again. There was no record of previous call. Service appears to be a problem. I am now into second week and still don't have an answer.
